As summer gives way to autumn at Horsham Bowling Club, the Monday Evening League draws to a close. The members enjoyed a prize giving and drinks at a very well attended evening.
Horsham won the County Mixed Fours in amazing style. Barbara Meyer, Wendy Smith, Robbie Calder and Richard Bourne won through the qualifying sessions to reach the final knockout stages. In the semi final they met a Horley team who they beat 14-3 over 7 ends including scoring that “holy grail” of bowling a maximum 8 point “hotshot” on the final end! Horsham then met Infinity, a team from Boxgrove near Chichester, historically one of the best teams in the county. Horsham won in dominant style 8-1 to become Mixed Pairs County Champions, also qualifying to play in the National finals at Solihull in February.
At the weekend, Horsham Bowling Club was represented by three pairs at the County Pairs Championship at Westergate, near Chichester. Two of the pairs won all their group games to make it into the last 8, with Robbie Calder and Martin Gardner eventually reaching the final. There they beat Southbourne 7-2 and so were crowned as County Pairs Champions and will represent Sussex in the National Finals at Melton Mowbray next year.
There was an important meeting at the AGM of Sussex County Bowls recently, attended by President Chris Holmes, past president Paul Jolliffe, Martin Jolliffe and club secretary Simon Felton. Four candidates had been considered for the Mike Newth Trophy for services to the club. The unanimous decision was to award the trophy to Simon, a member of the club for more than 30 years, and secretary for 22 years.
Congratulations Simon
